North Chelmsford Wall Repair: Patching Drywall

It’s easier than you might think to put a hole in your wall accidentally. Repeatedly hitting the wall with a doorknob or the back of a chair can put a dent in the drywall without you even noticing. Or, if you have kids at home, you know how quickly rough play can lead to household damage. You could also have a hole in your wall because you needed to access a pipe or electrical outlet to make home repairs. Whatever the reason, our team at PH Home Services is here to help with wall repair in North Chelmsford and expertly patch your drywall.

Here’s what we’ll do to patch your drywall when you need wall repair in your North Chelmsford home.

Fixing the Hole

Our repair method depends on the size of the hole. For example, if it’s very small or just a dent, all we have to do is fill the gap with spackle. If the hole is a bit bigger—usually about the size of a doorknob—we can use a self-adhesive mesh patch. After sanding the edges of the hole, we apply the patch to the wall and then cover it with spackle. Sometimes, we encounter a hole in the drywall that is too large to use a patch. In that case, we will cut a new piece of drywall to patch the damaged area. When we use this method, you’ll see us cutting around the existing hole in your wall, but don’t worry. We do that so we have a regular shape that we can easily fill with a new piece of drywall. Then, we apply spackle around the edges to hide the seams.

Covering the Patch

Patching the hole in your wall is only the first part of the process. After the spackle dries, we sand it smooth so that it is flush with the existing wall. But spackle is bright white and won’t blend in with the rest of your wall. To hide it, we have to paint over it. If it’s a small spot, priming and repainting with the same color should blend in the patch seamlessly. However, a large patch or a patch in a highly visible area may not be so simple. In that case, we recommend repainting the entire wall to keep the patch from standing out.
